This year, we are especially excited to have two local jazz artists from the Jeju Fine Arts and Culture Institute present a concert/workshop/Q&A with our students, Mr. Hanol Kim and Mr. Suhyun Park!
This workshop is intended for high school students and advanced middle school students who play any jazz band instrument (piano, bass, drum, guitar, saxophone, trumpet, trombone).
The objective for this workshop is to become more confident performing jazz music, learn simple approaches to improvisation, and engage with two local jazz musicians who will share their music and life experiences with students. In the morning session of the workshop students will learn to use specific articulation patterns for playing in a jazz style and rhythmic vocabulary for improvisation over the blues. Students will then break out into smaller groups under the guidance of a teacher and practice those concepts over a tune. After lunch, students will attend a concert/workshop with our guest artists! Our remaining time will be to review what we learned and share our experiences together.
This is the form to nominate students. Please fill out a new nomination form for each student. At the moment there is no cap on how many students you can nominate, however, you are expected to provide an appropriate number of chaperones/teachers for your group. I will contact directors after nominations are completed to confirm their spots and provide payment information.
This workshop cannot work without your help! If you are interested in helping lead a small group during the workshop please email me. No previous experience is necessary, I will provide you with the materials and lesson, all you need to do is start the small group and point to a student when it is their turn to solo! Josh Yaniw developed a fantastic jazz workshop culture over the last few years and we are fortunate to have that model continue!
If you are interested in making this into an overnight trip, KISJ recommends the Jeju Shinwha World Hotel which has reasonable prices, lots of restaurant/activity options, and is near the KISJ campus.
The nomination form will be open until September 10.
